One of the fastest growing services that I have available is Platelet Rich Platelet (PRP) therapy for hair regeneration. More and more clients are booking PRP for hair growth, and I’m feeling confident in my efficacy with this procedure, delighted to share it with the growing community of folks seeking this specific rejuvenation.

PRP for hair growth is for the clients who are finding that some areas of their hair are thinning. Whether from menopause, hypothyroidism, anemia, etc. there are many factors that may cause hair loss. There is evidence also that COVID may be an underlying factor in hair thinning (1). Regardless of the cause, a key factor here is that there has to be a hair follicle present. In other words, if the area is bald from hair, it would not make sense to treat with PRP because there is no hair follicle to stimulate. Thus, it’s best to receive this service sooner than later for hair regeneration.

PRP works by isolating growth factors from the blood and injecting that richly generative material into the scalp. There are numerous studies showing that this may help.

Before we begin treatment, we will do a consultation to assess if you are a good fit for the procedure. Because we are using your own blood for the treatment, it is essential to assess one’s overall health in order to ensure candidacy. We will talk about your goals, what you’ve tried so far, if you’ve worked with a dermatologist previously, etc. Then, we take your blood and ice the area while I spin the sample in the centrifuge to isolate the growth hormone. We will take a couple before-photos in order to gauge our results.

Moving toward the procedure itself, I’ve learned to prioritize comfort with this procedure– to do so, we numb the area with lidocaine and epinephrine, which can be a bit painful, but it ensures that the procedure is painless once the numbing has taken effect. Then I clean, apply the injections to the desired area, and finish with massage. While there is little down time after this procedure, your hair will be quite messy so it may be advisable to go home rather than out to a social gathering. Avoid washing the hair with anything other than water for the first twenty-four hours.

While in my experience this procedure has been quite well-tolerated, the next day you can expect some soreness and perhaps a headache. There is also always the chance that the procedure will not work, or that the results will feel underwhelming.

When we finish with the first treatment, you will leave with a comprehensive plan for recurring appointments. Typically, I will start by recommending one a month for the first three months, then three treatments spaced three months apart each. After those first six treatments, we will assess results and make a plan per individual from there.
