IV therapy with vitamins is one of my most favorite acts of self-care; I try to treat myself as often as I can. After a treatment I feel hydrated, energized, and roll with an extra glow due to this inner nutrient enhancement. Especially exciting this week, I am introducing a new IV therapy treatment as part of my ongoing services, the Myers’ Cocktail.

Building on the work of Dr. John Myers, this blend was originally composed to treat a wide range of conditions. The formula contains magnesium, calcium, B vitamins, and vitamin C.

This panacea blend is documented to help with a myriad of conditions from migraines to fatigue. It is often referred to as a ‘Banana Bag’ from combining colors of vitamin B complex and vitamin B12.

IV vitamin therapy has the distinct benefit of enriching the body with concentrations of vitamins that aren't achieved through oral intake. This is because the medicine goes straight into the blood rather than having to first be absorbed through the digestive tract. Giving nutrients via IV allows for the blood concentrations of that nutrient to reach levels unobtainable to reach when given orally. For example, when we take vitamin C by mouth the blood concentration tends to reach an upper limit due to GI absorption saturation and kidney clearance of the vitamin (1). Magnesium is similar in that oral administration results in little to no change in blood concentration whereas IV administration can double or triple the levels (2-3).

Further, some nutrients exert effects which are dependent on the concentration in the blood. For example, vitamin C has been shown to be antiviral at a concentration not obtainable by oral intake. The same may go for vitamin C’s antihistamine effect, making IV administration of vitamin C superior for allergy as compared to oral (4).

The article I resource for this blog post is written by Dr. Alan Gaby who has employed this treatment in his practice. The benefits he attests to come when one engages in regular treatments with the Myers’ cocktail. For some of his patients suffering from chronic illness, they received injections monthly, weekly, or twice weekly for many years - 25 years or more in a few cases. For those of us who are otherwise healthy, I recommend treating yourself on a monthly to quarterly basis; or come in when your immune system needs a boost.

There is an option to enhance the concentration of nutrients such as vitamin C and Magnesium and you can add-on a glutathione push. Vitamin C supports immunity, enhances collagen production, and gives us a boost of antioxidants. Glutathione is the most abundant antioxidant in the body. Unfortunately, our environment is burdened with toxins from air to food to water so added antioxidant support makes sense.

Make the Vitamin IV a self-care moment. Bring a favorite book or magazine to read while you sit back and relax into the receiving of the treatment. Be sure to come hydrated and after having already had a meal. You might also add on your botox treatment while you’re in the chair. Either way, you will be in the office for about an hour to receive the full duration of the IV.

Many of my services treat the symptoms of aging from the outside. Vitamin IV therapy is a way to nourish your internal landscape to lead to that beauty that shines through and through.
