As a practitioner of aesthetics in NE Portland, I recently watched The Substance, and its impact on me was profound. The film resonated deeply, reflecting many aspects of my work with Botox and dermal fillers, as well as my experiences as a woman navigating beauty and aging in today's world.

A big part of my job involves handing my clients a mirror. I observe you seeing yourselves, noticing the struggle to love what you see—and I understand this feeling all too well. We are conditioned to view ourselves through a critical lens, and The Substance powerfully captures this reality, highlighting how our pursuit of transformation often stems from this place of discontent.

Aging is an inevitable transformation. Internally, I find it to be a gift—I feel wiser, more confident, and more at ease with myself. Externally, however, I still face the pressure to resist the natural changes of my body and appearance. Our culture places immense value on the physical beauty of youth, making it challenging to embrace aging fully.

The film’s portrayal of Demi Moore's characters—both young and old—underscores the pitfalls of chasing transformation. In aesthetics, the line between subtle enhancements and over-treatment can blur quickly. The desire for self-improvement can lead to a cycle of seeking more, often driven by societal pressures and a skewed sense of self-worth.

For me, this raises important questions about ethics, values, and the true intention behind treatments like Botox and filler services. My goal is to help clients feel empowered by their choices, offering natural and balanced enhancements that support genuine confidence. Whether it’s a Botox treatment to smooth fine lines or a filler consultation to restore lost volume, my approach is always rooted in care, intention, and integrity.

At the heart of this reflection, as I replay Demi Moore’s struggle with her reflection, I find myself questioning how we can remain connected to our motivations. How can we feel genuinely empowered by our choices without slipping into obsession? While I don't have all the answers, I believe that holding space for these questions is a step toward a healthier relationship with beauty and self-image.

In my NE Portland aesthetic practice, I strive to create a space where we can explore these complexities together. Whether you’re considering Botox, dermal fillers, or simply seeking a safe space to discuss your goals, I am here to guide you with compassion and thoughtfulness. My hope is that, together, we can find a balance that allows you to look in the mirror and see not just beauty—but acceptance, growth, and self-love.
