Introducing: Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP is a part of your blood that is rich in platelets.  Platelets are responsible for the aggregation of blood.  When the skin experiences trauma, the platelets are activated to release factors that promote coagulation.  Platelets have been shown to contain growth factors and cytokines, both of which can affect inflammation, production of new blood vessels, stem cell migration, and cell production (1).  Applications of PRP therapy include:

  • Hair loss and hair thinning: A randomized, blinded, placebo controlled, half-headed study using 20 participants concluded that at the end of 3 treatment cycles, the patients improved in the mean number of hairs, and a mean increase in total hair density with no side effects from treatment (2).
  • Skin Rejuvenation: skin aging is part of the natural "agin mosaic" with several mechanisms at play.  Aging skin looses its elasticity causing the phenomenon of sagging, cell turnover slows down leading to a slower healing rate, with marked loss of collagen and fibrin contributing to wrinkes (3).  PRP has been shown to increase collagen production through histological evidence (4).  PRP has been shown to improve skin firmness-saggin and wrinkle state after 3 PRP treatments (5).
  • Acne Scars: PRP can promote collagen deposition which may explain the statistically significant improvement experienced in treatment of acne scars (6).
