Stress around the holiday season is REAL. It has the potential to ruin your holiday and hurt your health.

I introduce to you, ADAPTOGENIC HERBS. This week, I explain what exactly adaptogenic herbs are and why I recommend bringing these on board during the stressful holiday season. For those of you naïve to the power of these plants, this is for you!

Referred to as adaptogens, these plants help your body resist the ill effects of stress. Stress is our body’s response to sustaining the challenges and demands of today’s life rhythms. These ill-effects are a product of our body’s reaction to stress through activation of nervous and hormonal system circuits. Over time, these circuits exhaust and we become more susceptible to getting sick.

Our ability to adapt to stress defines the way we control it and whether or not it takes a toll on our health. Adaptogens do exactly this; they make our body more efficient at adapting to stress, therefore, better at recovering. Adaptogens are proven to help keep your immune system strong as well as improve your mental and physical fatigue.

My Top 5 Recommended Adaptogenic Herbs

  • GINSENG (panax ginseng or Eleutherococcus senticosus) has had medicinal uses in East Asian countries for thousands of years, mainly to maintain the body’s resistance to stress. Applied during the holiday time, they can help improve your physical function, sexual function and general vitality; they also seem to benefit our immunity (1).

  • RHODIOLA (Rhodiola rosea) is used in traditional medical systems in Eastern Europe and Asia with a reputation for stimulating the nervous system, decreasing depression and fatigue while enhancing work performance.

  • SCHISANDRA (Schisandra chinesis) first gained recognition as an adaptogen in the 1960’s after Russian scientists carried out a large number of studies. These studies concluded that Schisandra increased physical working activity and protects the body against stressors like heat shock, burns, cooling, irradiation, heavy metal toxicity and more (2). This is another star herb to support your body during the holidays.

  • TUSLI / HOLY BASIL (Ocimum tenuiflorum) Of all the herbs used within Ayurveda, tulsi is preeminent, and scientific research confirms the beneficial effects. Known as “The Queen of Herbs” and revered as an “elixir of life,” tulsi promotes stamina, a calm emotional disposition, and promotes wellbeing and resilience (3).

  • ASHWAGANDHA (Withania somnifera) is an admired herb of Ayurveda used for various disease processes and specifically as a nervine tonic. Studies show that ashwagandha can increase your stamina, support adrenal gland function (your body’s stress response gland), lower anxiety, and increase your energy. This is the perfect plant remedy for the stressful holiday season.

As for bringing these herbs on board, there is an array of products to choose from out there. Organic India has a line of tea that I recommend drinking throughout the day; you can purchase this at most grocery stores like Whole Foods and New Seasons.

As for adaptogenic products, I have a couple brands and supplements that I recommend. Any of the products listed below can be purchased through my online pharmacy where you get 10% off!

Follow the recommended dosing on the bottle and if there is any concern whether this products is safe for you, contact your physician.
